Sports Cause Sudden Death?

Exercise good for health. However, why exactly "a lot" of people who died after exercising? You certainly heard some figures like the late Benjamin S, Basuki, Burhanudidin Napitupulu and Adjie Massaid who died after exercise. Not to mention the other cases on neighbors, relatives, friends and other people who you know. Does exercise can be harmful to health? Heart disease
Common causes of death during or after exercise is a structural cardiovascular abnormalities, especially coronary heart disease. Competitive sports like football, basketball, swimming, tennis and baseball are known to have the highest incidence of sudden cardiac death. Research by RJ Northcote, DDK (1986) on 60 sudden deaths (59 male, 1 female with mean age 46 years) associated with the game of squash to explain that the cause is coronary artery disease (51 cases), heart valve disease ( 4 cases), cardiac arrhythmia (2 cases), and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (1 case). Only two deaths by non-cardiac causes.

Please note that people who are very physically fit can have severe heart disease. For example, in the study by Siscovick (1982), the marathon runner who died a week after completing the 90-km Marathon Camerad known to have advanced coronary artery disease is severe. A 42-year runner who completes the standard marathon 42.2 miles in just 3 hours 6 minutes just three weeks before his death showed he had a complete occlusion of one main coronary artery and narrowing of 75% in the other two. Russian athlete Sergei Grinikov, winning two Olympic gold medals the 28-year-old collapsed and died during practice. Autopsy showed coronary artery disease as the cause.

Mechanisms of heart attack
There are three mechanisms by strong physical activity lead to heart attacks. First, the initial wave of increased blood pressure as exercise can lead to disintegration of vulnerable atherosclerotic plaque thus releasing a thrombus (blood clot) that causes the blockage (occlusion) in total. Second, atherosclerotic plaque which does not clog (non-occlusive) can cause death of heart muscles due to an imbalance between demand and supply of oxygen the heart muscle. Third, a heart attack during exercise might result from coronary artery spasm, which most often occurs at the site of atherosclerosis. Regardless of which mechanisms are responsible for heart attacks, all cases of exercise-related sudden cardiac death due to a large reduction in cardiac output, decreased cerebral blood flow, and loss of consciousness.

Does exercise increase the risk of sudden death?
Various studies have shown that the risk of death (sudden or not) is reduced in people who exercise regularly. The study by Siscovick shown that regular exercise reduces the risk of sudden death by 70%. That is, if you are not diligent in exercising your risk of sudden death is 3 times the risk of those who diligently exercising. Regular exercise significantly reduces the risk of heart disease and other cardiovascular disorders.

People who have cardiovascular disease gain the greatest benefit from regular exercise. However, the people who are diseased heart, the risk of sudden death increased rapidly during or after intense exercise.

Tips for you
To reduce the risk of death related to sports, here are some tips to consider:

* Start exercising with light intensity and gradually increase the intensity. Do not exercise with high intensity abruptly.

* If you are over 50 years, doing cardiovascular examination before beginning any type of exercise program. When you are younger than 50 years but have a family history with a condition associated with sudden death or had symptoms and signs of cardiovascular disease (hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, etc.), you also need to consult a physician before following the exercise program. All people who have heart disease get medical supervision when following an exercise program, at least initially.

* When you feel abdominal pain, chest pain, shortness of breath abnormal (exceeding usually caused by intense activity) and other heart attack symptoms, immediately stop your activities and seek medical advice from doctors. Most (80%) of people who die suddenly during exercise have a warning symptom of heart disease is ignored, choosing instead to continue activities seek medical advice.

* Keep your cholesterol level and your blood pressure at normal levels. If your cholesterol and high blood pressure, immediately take steps to lower it. Maintain a healthy and balanced diet is heart healthy.

* Stop smoking. Smoking is the major cause of coronary artery disease. Smokers die an average of nearly 7 years younger than non-smokers.
